Arithmetic Reasoning and the AFQT

The single most trained AFQT skill: turning a paragraph of ordinary English into a correct calculation.

Why it carries weight

Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge together form the math half of the AFQT, and of the two, AR rewards study more reliably because its content is reasoning patterns rather than a memorised rule list. The AFQT is computed from four standard scores - Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge - and it is the score the services use to decide enlistment eligibility, so the four AFQT subtests are where study time pays interest.

AR is also the section with the most clock per item. A candidate who reads carefully and checks can afford to; one who rushes cannot use the time they were given. That makes pace discipline, not arithmetic speed, the biggest practical lever.

One caution that applies to all four clusters: practising on a fixed question bank raises your accuracy on that bank. Improvement that generalises comes from doing each item type until the underlying relationship is obvious, not from memorising which answer was right.

Skills, in training order

01

Translate the scenario before computing

Say the relationship out loud in one sentence: "the vans are two parts, the trucks are three." If you cannot state it, you do not yet have an equation, and starting to calculate is how people land on a distractor.

02

Answer the question that was asked

Write a two-word note in the margin naming the target quantity - "vans", "remaining", "interest only". Distractors on AR are overwhelmingly correct intermediate values from earlier steps.

03

Own the five recurring models

Ratio-to-one-part, distance equals rate times time, rates add after inversion, total equals count times mean, and percent of a moving base. Almost every AR item is one of these, sometimes two stacked.

04

Estimate, then verify magnitude

Before selecting, decide roughly what the answer must be. If the scenario shrinks a quantity by a third, an option larger than the start is impossible and you are down to two choices.

05

Back-solve from the choices

When the problem gives a final result and asks for an input, substitute the choices and compute forward. Two minutes of substitution beats five minutes of algebra under time pressure.

Reference, not routine

The subtest guide for Arithmetic Reasoning covers the item types, topic map and common mistakes: read the AR subtest page.

Score context

  • The AFQT is a percentile, not a percentage: it says what share of the reference group you scored at or below. Nobody gets 100 percent of anything.
  • Practice accuracy on this site is a count of correct answers out of questions answered. It has no standard-score, norm or equating basis, so it cannot be converted into an AFQT and we never present it as one.
  • AR carries the same weight as the other three AFQT subtests in the composite. Because it has the most time per item, unclaimed AR time is the most expensive waste in the core four.
The routine

What to actually do this week

The free Arithmetic Reasoning set uses the same item types as the section, graded instantly with the reasoning shown step by step.

Step 1

Days 1 to 3: one topic a day from the ratio, percent and rate sets, untimed, reading every explanation including the distractor notes.

Step 2

Days 4 to 6: mixed sets of 16 items against a 39-minute clock, simulating the section pacing.

Step 3

Day 7: review only your wrong items. Name the specific step that failed - translation, units, or the final question - rather than writing "careless".

Step 4

Ongoing: keep an error log with three columns - topic, what I did, what the item wanted. Patterns in the second column are worth far more than extra volume.

Step 5

Weekly: one full timed AR block. Accuracy on a first pass matters more than accuracy after review.

Example 1Ratios & ProportionsArithmetic Reasoning · difficulty 1/5

A base motor pool has trucks and vans in a ratio of 3 to 2. If there are 18 trucks, how many vans are there?

  1. A27 vans
  2. B9 vans
  3. C12 vans
  4. D6 vans
Answer C

The ratio 3:2 means the 18 trucks represent 3 equal parts, so one part is 18 ÷ 3 = 6 vehicles. Vans make up 2 parts, so there are 2 × 6 = 12 vans.

Why the other choices are wrong
  • A 27 vans - This reverses the ratio, computing 18 × 3/2 = 27.
  • B 9 vans - This divides 18 by 2 instead of using the 3:2 ratio.
  • D 6 vans - This is the size of one ratio part (18 ÷ 3), not the number of vans.
Example 2PercentagesArithmetic Reasoning · difficulty 1/5

A jacket costs $80. It is discounted by 25%. What is the sale price?

  1. A$60
  2. B$20
  3. C$55
  4. D$105
Answer A

A 25% discount means the customer pays 75% of the original price: 80 × 0.75 = $60. Equivalently, the discount is 80 × 0.25 = $20, and 80 − 20 = $60.

Why the other choices are wrong
  • B $20 - $20 is the discount amount, not the sale price.
  • C $55 - $55 subtracts 25 dollars instead of 25 percent.
  • D $105 - $105 adds 25% instead of subtracting it.
Example 3Rate, Time & DistanceArithmetic Reasoning · difficulty 1/5

A convoy travels at 60 miles per hour for 3 hours. How far does it travel?

  1. A20 miles
  2. B120 miles
  3. C180 miles
  4. D240 miles
Answer C

Distance equals rate times time: 60 × 3 = 180 miles.

Why the other choices are wrong
  • A 20 miles - 20 miles divides 60 by 3 instead of multiplying.
  • B 120 miles - 120 miles is the distance for only 2 hours.
  • D 240 miles - 240 miles is the distance for 4 hours.

The other three

MK

Mathematics Knowledge

A closed list of rules. Because it is finite, it is the fastest AFQT subtest to improve.

WK

Word Knowledge

Vocabulary is the slowest AFQT skill to build and the most permanent once built.

PC

Paragraph Comprehension

The most forgiving AFQT subtest to prepare for, because the answers are always on the page.

Make Arithmetic Reasoning automatic
